Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Dog Carrying Basket Decoration, Stamped "S. HART / FULTON," NY State origin, circa 1860, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a standing dog with heavily-striped body and upswept tail, carrying a basket in its mouth. Stylized ground below, composed of diagonally slip-trailed slashes and spots, underscored by a cobalt-script "2." Slip-trailed stripes through maker's mark. Includes wooden stopper. Among the finest examples of this well-known Hart motif that we have offered, exhibiting superb color to the cobalt and broad coverage of the design over the jug's front. A horizontal line through handle and a 1 3/4" line and tiny chip along edge of handle. A few in-the-firing pings and a small piece of adhered clay to surface. A minor in-the-firing base chip. Some bubbling, but no fry, to the heavier areas of cobalt application. H 12 1/2".
