Rare Cobalt-and-Albany-Slip-Decorated Anna Pottery School Stoneware Spaniel, Midwestern origin, circa 1885, molded figure of a seated spaniel on multi-sided bas, the ears and tail decorated with brushed Albany slip, the base highlighted in cobalt. Surface covered in a heavy salt glaze. Inspection of the open underside and hollow interior of the spaniel indicate the spaniel and the base were made separately, joined, then fired. The specific style of spaniel mold used and the figure's two-color slip treatment relate this work to spaniels produced by Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick of Anna, Illinois. Three post-firing base chips and a 1 3/4" in-the-firing flake to bottom edge. A firing crack to interior, not visible on exterior. H 13 5/8".
