Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1885, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird with heavily-detailed body, perched on a plant. Slip-trailed "5" to right of maker's mark. Large area of restoration to right of and below decoration. This restoration does not touch the bird, except for the tip of its tail, and also touches parts of the plant's leaves. A flake is visible on the right leaf. This restoration continues onto the right side of the churn, the bottom half of the churn on the reverse, as well as around the base of the churn and underside. The extent of this damage is unknown. A 7/8" in-the-firing ping to reverse. A minor in-the-firing surface line to end of one handle, visible on reverse. Minor chips inner rim for lid. Residue to interior. H 18 1/8".
