Exceedingly Rare and Important One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Figural Decoration, Stamped "ST JOHNS / STONE WARE", George W. Farrar, St. John, Quebec, Canada, circa 1860, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with a brushed folk art design of a standing man in profile with outstretched arms. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Representations of the human form on Canadian stoneware are exceptionally rare. The appeal of this jug is enhanced by its one-gallon size, large size of the decoration, and desirable maker's mark, used by a member of the illustrious Farrar family of potters. A thin band of surface wear to shoulder. A few spout chips. A minor, glazed-over nick to edge of handle and a minor in-the-making chip to top of handle, which is partially glazed-over.
