Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.", circa 1835, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a large flowering plant, each bearing five fan-shaped blossoms. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. An unusual design for this maker, potted in a desirable size. The use of the same, large-sized design on the front and reverse is additionally noteworthy, as Alexandria stoneware typically has less-elaborate decoration on the reverse. Excellent condition. A minor chip to front end of right handle. A tiny nick to opposite handle, probably in-the-firing. A minor rim nick.
