Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SMITH & DAY / NORWALK, CONN.", circa 1843-1847, ovoid pitcher with pinched spout and tall collar with tooled accents, the front decorated with a bold slip-trailed design of a looping stem bearing abstract flower blossoms and leaves. Additionally decorated below the collar with a slip-trailed wavy line. Body impressed with Smith & Day maker's mark. Exceptional form for this maker, exhibiting superb color. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced NC collection, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Two small spout chips, a few rim chips, and an in-the-firing iron ping to reverse.
