Extremely Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Inkwell, Stamped "SMITH & DAY / NORWALK", CT origin, circa 1840, cylindrical form with footed base, tooled rim, and central ink reservoir surrounded by three quill holes, the shoulder impressed with a cobalt-highlighted "SMITH & DAY" maker's mark. An exceptional form for this maker, and the first example that we have ever offered. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced NC collection, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Old, possibly 19th century, 1 1/4" x 7/8" filled spot on underside. A rim chip. Some staining to underside, extending a short distance onto base, probably from ink. H 2" ; Diameter 3 3/8".
