Rare Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, squat, cylindrical cooler with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, applied lug handles, and large circular bunghole, the front decorated with a graduated flower blossom or grape cluster. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, handle terminals, and area surrounding bunghole. Cooler includes a domed, salt-glazed lid that loosely fits, 19th century American in origin. A difficult-to-find Harrisburg form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor approximately forty years ago. An approximately 6" X-shaped hairline on reverse. A 1 1/8" horizontal line in one handle. An in-the-firing, glazed-over dent to rim. Some staining. Lid in excellent condition with a minor chip to knob.
