Rare Small-Sized Multi-Glazed Redware Cream Pitcher, attributed to S. Bell & Son or J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, diminutive, ovoid pitcher with slightly-footed base, the surface decorated with heavy streaks of copper and manganese over cream-colored with traces of orange base clay visible. Handle applied and then cut along the underside with a potter's knife to assume a thinner, more graceful appearance. This pitcher is the first Shenandoah Valley multi-glazed example of this specific form we have ever offered. The vast majority of miniature multi-glazed pitchers feature a narrower form, thick foot, and tall, flaring collar. The shape of this pitcher is more analogous with stoneware examples of the form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. Wear to rim and spout. Minor base wear. H 3 7/8".
