Half-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK", early 19th century, half-gallon, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, featuring cloud-like cobalt brushwork around the maker's mark and a cobalt swag and dot motif on the reverse. Unusual form and size. Provenance: Robert Meltzer Collection. Interestingly, recessed spots covered in salt glaze on the sides of the jar indicate that it was originally made with open loop handles, which were removed prior to firing. Iron pings to surface. A small rim chip. Some faint surface lines near base, which are not visible on the interior and likely occurred during the firing. H 6 1/4".
