Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Butterfly Decoration, Stamped "JULIUS NORTON, / BENNINGTON VT", circa 1841-1844, ovoid jug with squared spout and heavily-ribbed handle, decorated with a brushed design of a butterfly with long antennae and two incised dots for eyes. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A desirable Norton motif. A 1/8" hole in reverse. A small stone ping to right side of jug's front. A 1" in-the-firing chip above a small adhered piece of clay on reverse.
