Very Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, attributed to Howe & Clark, Athens, NY, circa 1805-1813, highly-ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated on the front with an abstract foliate design accented with spots. Sides of jug decorated with looping, cross-shaped designs. Brushed cobalt highlight to lower handle terminal. The spout construction of this jug is consistent with pieces bearing the elusive, early mark of Nathan Clark and his brother-in-law, Thomas Howe. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Long spider crack to front. Thin cracks throughout side of jug. Three clusters of tight lines to reverse. Two short lines in spout. Chips to interior of spout and a minor chip to exterior of spout. Small base chips. A small piece of adhered clay at base.
