Rare Three-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration and 1803 Date, Northeastern U.S. origin, 1803, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on one side with the large brushed date, "1803", and on the reverse with a large tulip blossom. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a looping line of cobalt underneath each handle. Exceptionally-early date. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Two in-the-firing base chips, measuring 2" and 1/2". A 1 1/2" in-the-firing crack on underside, continuing 5 1/4" up side of jar, where it is glazed over.
