NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large and bold design of a spotted deer on a hill, flanked by a fence and shrubs. Additional heavy grass and shrub decoration in foreground. A dramatic design with excellent color, measuring approximately 12" across and 9" tall. Deer decoration produced during this period in Julius Norton's stoneware production are considered rare. The size of this example is likewise exceptional. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor in the early 1980's. Old restoration to base, touching some of decoration, but not the deer itself. Some flakes at edge on underside. H 13".
