Redware Mug with Sponged Manganese Decoration, possibly Edwin Brosius Pottery, Kennett Square, Chester County, PA, second half 19th century, cylindrical mug with footed base, tooled midsection, and ribbed strap handle, the surface decorated with dark manganese sponging and covered in a clear lead glaze. Utilitarian forms of this distinctive glaze and color have been attributed to Edwin Brosius of Kennett Square, PA. A porringer of identical glaze is currently in the collection of the Chester County Historical Society in Westchester, PA. Provenance: Collected in the Long Island, New York area. Rim chips and a glaze flake to interior base. Otherwise excellent condition. H 5 1/2".
