Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Decoration of a Soldier or Hunter with Rifle, probably Midwestern U.S. or New Jersey origin, circa 1860-1880, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with folky slip-trailed design of a striding, goateed man with hat and rifle. Possibly a depiction of a Civil War soldier. Shoulder decoration with an underscored "2". Excellent folk art representation of the human form, featuring strong, thick cobalt slip. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in the Midwestern U.S. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor, in-the-firing nick to left side.
