Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt "1833" Date, Stamped "CLARK & FOX / ATHENS," New York State origin, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a bold cobalt date "1833" across the shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Superior color on this example, with deep cobalt set against a cream-colored clay ground. Excellent condition with a minor, 2 1/8" X-shaped line under one handle, which occurred in-the-firing, a 1" horizontal surface line at top of rim, and minor base nicks.
