Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "M. & T. MILLER / NEWPORT, PA," circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a heavily-brushed stem with leaves, culminating in a tulip blossoms. Cobalt highlights to maker's and capacity marks. Excellent decoration and desirable Central Pennsylvania maker. 1 3/4" chip to underside at edge, possibly in-the-firing. Some glazed-over, in-the-firing surface lines on front, not visible on interior. One of these lines extends a short distance onto underside. A 3" H-shaped, in-the-firing line on reverse, which is glazed-over and not visible on the interior. A second tight crack on underside, which extends several inches up reverse side of jar. Three small chips to interior of rim. 1 1/8" glazed-over line above one handle. Some traces of old dark paint to surface.
