Extremely Rare Set of Five Carved Stoneware Decorative Stamps, One Signed and Dated "C. Hunkel 1854," possibly Southwestern PA, set of unglazed hand-modeled stamps with carved sides, depicting the following designs: a horse, two women holding flowers, a fruit basket, an angel's head with wings surrounded by a heart, and a nesting bird piercing its breast to feed its young. One stamp incised "C. Hunkel / 1854," the presumed maker of the stamps. This recent discovery is the only group of its type we have seen. Whether these stamps were made to decorate pottery or a food product of some kind is currently unknown. Provenance: A recent discovery from a long-term Midwestern collection. Some chips to stamps. L (of each) 1 1/4".
