Rare Sgraffito-Decorated Redware Plate, Dated "NOV 17, A.D. 1809," possibly Pennsylvania-German, 19th or early 20th century, with coggled edge and interior coated in a yellow slip, the plate featuring an elaborate sgraffito tulip plant design surrounded by the Pennsylvania-German slogan "War Nicht Cumb Zu Rechter Stide dar mus Nammen was everlich blibe," which translates to "He who does not come at the right time gets what remains". Additional wavy incised line around edge. Surface covered in a heavy lead glaze. Excellent decoration and condition. We can find no examples of 18th or 19th century sgraffito ware that match this particular style. This plate may be a 19th century example, or possibly a product of the early 20th century. Provenance: Purchased fourteen years ago from an antiques dealer in Adamstown, PA. Excellent condition with a few glaze flakes on interior. Diameter 9 7/8".
