Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Large Cobalt Flowering Urn Design, Stamped "J.& E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flower and numerous leaves extending from an urn with fence in foreground. Decoration is unusually large, covering much of the jar's front. A desirable Norton design. Long crack extending approximately halfway around base, with three cracks extending from it. One of these cracks extends 7" up front of jar, another extends 7" up reverse of jar, and the third forms a 7 1/2" Y on underside. Additional 1 1/2" hairline from rim on side of jar. 1" flake on side of jar. Several small chips on interior of rim. Wear to inner ledge where a lid would fit. H 11 1/2".
