Monumental Fifteen-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand and Stenciled Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES / STAR POTTERY / GREENSBORO, PA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled midsection and shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the top half with a large freehand fuchsia vine design between cobalt stripes. Lower half with desirable "Star Pottery" stenciling surrounding a stenciled star and flanked by cobalt dashes. An outstanding and boldly-decorated example of Western PA stoneware. Gifted to the consignor by a neighbor thirty years ago, and never offered for public sale since its manufacture. Provenance: From a thirty-five year Western PA collection. 3" loss to rim with a 4" hairline extending horizontally from it. Thin cracks on underside, with hairlines extending onto base. 4" glazed-over vertical separation at base. 9" Y-shaped hairline on reverse. 7" hairline extending down from shoulder on reverse. Some minor chips to rim and shoulder molding. H 23".
