Oustanding Lidded Presentation Redware Tobacco Jar, West Bloomfield, NY, Dated 1856, cylindrical jar with heavily-tooled bands and applied handles, the surface covered in an attractive cream-colored glaze. Jar is incised on one side in large letters "Wm. HiLL / Tobacoo (sic)." Three crossed tobacco pipe designs surround this inscrption. Reverse incised "William Hill / West Bloomfield" along with a crossed pipe design below the rim. Underside incised "James / Pilsbury / West Bloomfield, / 1856." Pilsbury is listed as a potter in the 1855 census of the village of Bloomfield. This jar also includes its original cream-glazed lid with incised wavy line decoration and tooled finial. An exceptionally well-glazed and incised example of American presentation redware. Chips to shoulder molding and wear to rim and handles. Lid with 3 1/2" section reglued. Heavy chipping to edges of lid, mostly visible on underside. A chip and wear to finial. H (including lid) 7".
