Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Merchant Advertising and Elaborate Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "WM. PECK / DRUGGIST & GROCER / GLENS-FALLS N.Y.," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, flaring rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt scene depicting a large stag with turned head and spotted body, reclining atop a hill with tree and fence in the foreground and background. An artistically-rendered design, executed in crisp, dark cobalt against a light background. Provenance: A newly-surface example consigned from Illinois. Minor bubbling to cobalt. Some faint lines, which only partially extend through to interior, and may have occurred during the firing. Chips on interior of rim. 1 7/8" rim chip on reverse. Light staining from use. Y-shaped line on underside, continuing 1 3/4" up base of jar on reverse. H 11 3/4".
