Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Chicken Whistle, attributed to John Nase, Montgomery County, PA, circa 1830-1850, hand-modeled whistle in the form of a chicken with applied whattle, comb, and wings. Surface decorated with drips of whitish slip over a mottled brown lead and manganese glaze. Rare form. For a similar example by Nase, see Barber's "Tulip Ware of the Pennsylvania-German Potters," p. 171. Tail rebuilt. Restoration to much of base. Glaze loss to face and sides, particularly near rear on one side. H 3 1/8" ; Length 4".
