Extremely Rare Miniature Redware Lidded Pot in the Form of a Snail, probably Pennsylvania origin, 19th century, dome-shaped pot with rounded handle and incised line detail, designed to resemble a snail's shell. Surface covered in a reddish-brown lead and manganese glaze. Base with applied body of a snail, decorated with cream-colored slip under a clear lead glaze. Metal wire fitted into the snail's head create its eyes. Pot includes original lid with identical glazing and similar curved line incised. A very rare and highly creative example of American redware, likely made for a child's use. Heavy wear to snail's body at base. Chips to edge of lid and losses to flange on underside of lid. Wear to opening of pot. Stacker marks on underside of pot. H (including lid) 3".
