Rare Moravian Redware Bear Bottle, attributed to Rudolph Christ, Salem, NC, early 19th century, molded bottle in the form of a standing fat-bodied bear on an oval base, its arms at its sides, its foot resting on a molded lamb. Figure features a toothed mouth, small tail on reverse, and molded and hand-incised detail to paws. Surface covered in a blackish-brown lead and manganese glaze. An outstanding Southern figural form of significant rarity. Provenance: Christies, Important American Furniture, Folk Art and Decorative Arts, New York, Saturday, October 23, 1993. Restoration to ears. Light wear to surface. 7/8" base flake. H 6 1/2".
