Rare Moravian Redware Squirrel Bottle, attributed to Rudolph Christ, Salem, NC, early 19th century, molded bottle in the form of a standing squirrel eating a nut with applied ears and molded detail to tail and paws. Surface covered in a yellowish slip and decorated with daubs of green and brown under a clear lead glaze. With a visually-appealing presence, the Moravian squirrel bottle has become one of the iconic forms of pottery from the American South. Provenance: Christie's, Important American Furniture, Folk Art and Decorative Arts, Saturday, October 23, 1993. Some restoration to spout. Light wear to one ear. Glazed-over chip and light wear to opposite ear. Base with a few small chips and minor glaze loss. H 7 5/8".
