Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Milkpan with Impressed Star, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1870, tapered pan with pouring spout and squared rim, decorated completely around with a series of brushed cobalt clovers. An unusual star mark is impressed into the shoulder; this stamp has been found on several other examples of Baltimore stoneware, presumably by the same maker. The meaning of this stamp is currently unknown. It may serve as the signature of a specific potter active at one of the large potteries in Baltimore. Rim and spout chips. Partially restored crack from rim, extending onto underside. H 4 3/4" ; Diameter 12".
