Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Double Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON/ BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, straight-sided jug with sloping shoulder, semi-squared spout, and applied handle, decorated with a very large slip-trailed design of two pheasants perched on the branches of an unusual triple-branched tree. Pheasants depicted with turned heads and long tails. Tree accented with shaded edges, flanked by shrubs. Decoration covers neary the entire front of the jug. A very fine example of Norton stoneware with excellent color. Provenance: From a long-term NC collection. Near mint condition with one spout chip. H 15 1/4".
