Very Rare and Fine Lead and Manganese Glazed Redware Wall Pocket, Signed in Script "Anthony W. Bacher / 1879," Winchester, VA origin, cornucopia-form wall pocket with scalloped edge and applied bird and floral decorations. The bird, detailed with incised wings and tail, is perched at the base of the applied floral design, consisting of a stem bearing two flowers and three leaves. Flowers intricately detailed with a blunt tool at the edge and center. Veins of the leaves incised with a finer tool. Base and tail of cornucopia heavily ridged. Incised on reverse in script "Anthony W. Bacher / 1879". A fine example of Bacher's skill and sophistication as both a wheel-thrower and modeler of clay. Provenance: The Collection of Dr. Henry P. & Mrs. Deyerle, Sothebys, 1995, Lot 440. Repair to crack in tail of cornucopia. H 7".
