Very Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Hawk and Rising Sun Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, straight-sided crock with handles, decorated with an artistically slip-trailed design of a hawk with large, well-detailed wings, flying above a scene of sloping hills, three fences, ground cover, and a tree. A rising sun with rays peaks above a valley at the center of the crock. Both the hawk and rising sun designs are considered rare decorations on Norton stoneware, and American stoneware in general. Excellent color and condition on this example. Two small chips on interior of rim. Short hairline from rim above one handle. H 12 1/2".
