1/2 Gallon Decorated Stoneware Jar, Signed "SOLOMON BELL / STRASBURG / Va"

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #SOBJ07

Description:

This approximately 1/2 gallon stoneware jar is stamped below the rim

SOLOMON BELL
STRASBURG
Va,

and was made at the Bell Pottery in Strasburg, VA, circa 1850 to 1880. The jar was heavily coated in a white slip, then decorated with two cobalt flowers at the shoulder. The slip coating has heavy concentrations on the rim area and base of the jar, which adds to the folky look of the piece. This jar has an unusually narrow form with a smooth rounded shoulder.

A good example of Solomon Bell's work, with color contrast difficult to find on Strasburg stoneware.

Size:

9" tall.

Condition:

Near mint condition. One very, very small chip on rim.

Price:

$595
