Slip-trailed Chain Link Jar, att. B.C. Milburn, Alexandria, VA

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #ALMJ08

Description:

This ovoid jar was probably made at the Wilkes Street Pottery in Alexandria, Virginia, circa 1845, when it was under the ownership of potter, B.C. Milburn. Although unsigned, it exhibits the slip-trailed cobalt chain links characteristic of many of his pieces. The decoration is vivid and contrasts strikingly with the light gray clay body. Some experts have suggested that chain link decorations found on Alexandria vessels are related to slave potters and decorators who worked in the area.

Size:

10 ¾" tall.

Condition:

Thin lines on body and one large rim chip; crock rings true when tapped.
