Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Kaolin Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER / MAKER," Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jar with thin rim and long tab handles, the surface covered in light, gray-green alkaline glaze and decorated on the front and reverse with slip-trailed kaolin slip drape motifs. Further decorated below each handle with looping kaolin slip designs. A shallow 1 1/2" flake to end of one handle. A shallow 5/8" chip to opposite handle. A 1 3/4" rim chip. A 5" horizontal hairline below rim on reverse. What appears to be a horizontal hairline near the base on reverse is actually a throw line from when the jar was turned on the wheel. H 16 1/4".
