Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout and applied clay ears holding an original wood-and-wire bail handle. Decorated on the front with two floral motifs featuring graduated, spotted blossoms. Wreath-like brushwork surrounding the base of the spout. Reverse with additional spotted flower blossom motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, ears, and terminals of handle at base on reverse. Includes tins of an unknown age. A well-decorated example of a prized Cowden & Wilcox form. Provenance: David Musser Collection. Very nice overall condition. A shallow spout chip. A 1 1/8" hairline from rim on reverse. A minor chip and nick to rim. Two small, glazed-over lines at base on reverse. H 8 1/2".
