Scarce Three-Gallon Portland Station Stoneware Advertising Jar, Western PA origin, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and lug handles, featuring the stenciled cobalt inscription "FROM / J.T. HODGENS / MERCHANT / PORTLAND STATION". Cobalt stripes to shoulder area. Freehand cobalt number 3 at base and impressed number 3 at shoulder. Cobalt is applied over a slip coating. A 3/4" iron ping to the "OR" in "PORTLAND". A thin 6 1/2" crack from rim. Some areas near base on reverse where slip did not take.
