Fine Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "Lm Aug 24, 1858," attributed to Dave the Slave, Lewis Miles' Stoney Bluff Manufactory, Edgefield, SC, 1858, highly-ovoid jar with thin, semi-rounded rim and large arching tab handles, the shoulder featuring the large inscription "Lm Aug 24 1858". Surface covered in a wonderful pale-green alkaline glaze with iron flecks throughout. Reverse with incised "X" at shoulder. Excellent, large-sized inscription, impressive size, and classic Dave form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a Southeastern Virginia collection amassed decades ago. Flakes to surface, primarily on reverse. Heavy exfoliation to underside and interior base. Approximately 3 1/2" X 1/2" chipped area on exterior of rim on jar's left side, partially visible on interior, with some old putty fill. Two chips to one handle. H 15".
