Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Cornucopia Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of cornucopia brimming with large flowers, leaves, and looping vines. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. An outstanding decoration, particularly rare by this highly-regarded family of potters. The first example of Norton cornucopia decoration we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in the Northeastern U.S. Very nice condition with a small chip to left side of spout, a very minor, shallow chip to top of spout, and a 2 1/4" surface line to shoulder, possibly in-the-firing.
