Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Large Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J.B. PFALTZGRAFF & CO. / YORK, PA," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large brushed design of a paddletaield bird perched on a branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Bird decorations on a piece of stoneware bearing any Pfaltzgraff mark are considered rare. This example includes the more unusual and desirable mark of John B. Pfaltzgraff.Wear and a few shallow chips to rim. Sealed branch-like crack to left side of jar's front/side, extending across underside and up reverse as a 4 1/2" faint line. Light wear to handles.
