Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Laughing Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped \"COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA,\" circa 1865, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and tapered spout, decorated with a brushed design of a human face flanked by a leafy stem. The brushed man-in-the-moon design on this jug assumes an unusual \"laughing\" expression with open mouth. Most examples are found with a closed mouth. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in a Central PA family to the consignor. Spout chips. Very tight 3 3/4\" line to shoulder. Staining to surface. 2\" x 7/8\" base chip, possibly in-the-firing. Three insignificant, in-the-firing chips to underside. Three small, in-the-firing stone pings. Some scattered small flakes to sides and reverse of jug.
