Rare Two-and-a-Half-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher, Baltimore, MD, origin, circa 1830, squat-shaped ovoid pitcher with ribbed handle, heavily-decorated completely around with a brushed cobalt leaf and flower design. Collar decorated with brushed cobalt leaf design. Cobalt at handle terminals. Stoneware with this squat form was typically produced in Baltimore to be sold by the city's ship chandlers, because the shape kept it from tipping easily while used at sea. It is likely that this pitcher, with such an unusual shape, was made for such a purpose. Chipping to base, some of which are glazed over. X-shaped line on reverse by handle. H 12 1/4".
