Important COERLEARS HOOK / N. YORK (Thomas Commeraw) Stoneware Jar

March 5, 2011 Stoneware Auction

Lot #: 189

Price Realized: $25,875.00 (Price includes 15% buyer's premium).

Exceedingly Rare and Important Two-Gallon Ovoid Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped "COERLEARS HOOK / N. YORK," Thomas Commeraw, Manhattan, NY, late 18th century, rotund jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and base, constructed with open loop handles (one missing). Each side decorated with a large, finely-incised floral design with tassel-shaped blossom, underscored by the words "COERLEARS HOOK" and "N. YORK". Pieces bearing this early variant of potter Thomas Commeraw’s maker's mark are considered extremely rare, and rank as some of the finest examples of early Manhattan floral decoration known. One such jar was chosen for the cover image of William C. Ketchum, Jr.'s book, The Pottery and Porcelain Collector's Handbook, published in 1971. Possibly the finest example of Manhattan stoneware to sell at auction in years. One handle missing, though cobalt visible covering a portion of the break reveals this damaged occurred during the firing. Glazed-over base chip. Faint areas of crazing to surface, possibly in-the-firing. H 11".
