Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Advertising, Midwestern origin, circa 1860, ovoid jar with tall collar, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed cobalt flowering plant design and a script cobalt "3". Shoulder impressed with three lines of advertising for the Detriot, MI merchants, Moore & Foote. Advertising reads "MOORE & FOOTE WHOLESALE DEALERS IN GROCERIES, PROVISIONS, / WHITEFISH & TROUT STONEWARE PAINTS OILS, DYE WOODS & SASH & / GLASS ANCHORS CHAINS ROPES CANVASS & OTHER SHIP CHANDLER." A fine and highly unusual example of American advertising stoneware. Handle chip. Rim chip on reverse. A few other minor rim nicks. H 12".
