Rare Ohio Pottery Figure of Dog with Cream-Colored Glaze, circa 1866, hand-modeled figure of a dog with incised fur and facial details, seated on a stamp-decorated border and incised and stamped plant design at the center. Incised on underside "T. H." Surface covered in a clear glaze over a whitish ground. Brown highlights to eyes. Includes a note which reads "NOTE- OVER 100 YEARS OLD / Pretty Dog, given to Elmer D. Hester (my grandfather) when he was a very small boy- Less than 5 yrs. of age. Is over 100 yrs. old for E.D. Hester was born Jan 3, 1862. His mother died when he was only ? years old. Donor + Sculptor is unknown. Jan., 1971 Mrs. Hester L. King (H.J.)" Tail lost during firing. Dog reattached to base. Loss to front of base. One front foot reattached. Back feet reattached. H 7" ; Length 5 1/2".
