Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Exuberant Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1850, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, thin squared rim, and applied tab handles. Decorated with a bold, brushed cobalt flowering plant design with four flowers and numerous leaves covering nearly the entire front of the jar and extending around its sides. Reverse of jar decorated with a chain link and horizontal leaf motif. This jar is decorated with some of the strongest cobalt we have seen on an example of Virginia stoneware. We believe this jar is one of the finest examples of the form by Milburn known. Provenance: Recently discovered in Oregon. Excellent condition with base chips and one small nick to shoulder molding. H 13".
