Very Rare Shenandoah Valley Stoneware Fruit Jar, Stenciled "PLUMBS," attributed to John Morgan, Sr., Rockbridge Co., VA, circa 1835, tall, straight-sided jar with rounded shoulder coggled with three rows of sawtoothed lines. Cobalt-decorated with a stenciled drape and tassel decoration above the word "PLUMBS" in bold stenciled letters. Form, stenciling, and color, all consistent with the work of John Morgan, Sr., a New York-trained potter active in Rockbridge County, VA, circa 1825 to 1850. For a jar attributed to Morgan with identical stenciled drape design and the word "Peaches," see Comstock, page 317, figure 6.4. Fruit jars by this maker are considered very rare. In-the-firing touch mark on front with hairline extending through it. Two tiny rim chips. H 12".
