Rare Miniature Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Incised "C S," attributed to the Swank Pottery, Johnstown, PA, circa 1875, ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and delicately-applied, arched lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with cobalt daubs around the shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and three dashes under one handle. Incised on underside with the initials, "C S," probably for Charles McClelland Swank (1863-1898), son of Hiram Swank. Whether this piece was made for Charles Swank as a child during the 1870s or made later by Swank himself is unclear. Swank worked as a machinist early in life, but was later involved in the family pottery. Featuring an exceptional size that perfectly follows the form of the Swanks' standard-sized jars, this work belongs to a small body of miniatures that descended in this family of potters. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a salt drip to underside and a minor glazed-over dent to bottom edge. H 2 1/4" ; Diam. 2 1/8".
