Outstanding Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration and Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "Star Pottery," Hamilton & Jones, Greensboro, PA, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated throughout the upper half with an undulating flowering vine between freehand stripes, below a stylized drape motif. Midsection decorated with a row of vining. Further decorated below with a stenciled Federal eagle holding a banner, inscribed "Star Pottery," flanked by graduated dashes. Base with freehand "10" surrounded by spots, flanked by vining, spots, and stripes, and underscored by a rows of spots above a freehand stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A beautiful example featuring extravagant, top-to-bottom brushwork, unusual spotted treatment, and the region's desirable eagle motif. Excellent condition with a 5" horizontal surface line below proper right handle, not visible on interior, and in-the-firing contact mark near base on reverse, and two small in-the-firing contact marks to front. H 19 3/4".
