Scarce Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Stenciled Pinwheel and Freehand Stripe Decoration, probably Stephen H. Ward, West Brownsville, PA, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and tooled accents to body and shoulder, decorated with two rows of stenciled pinwheel motifs interspersed with wavy freehand stripes. Base with freehand "2" flanked by dashes. Very nice condition. A 3/4" filled and colored flake to interior of rim. Light surface wear to shoulder area. A small in-the-firing contact mark. Minor in-the-firing ping to right of decoration. A 1" line from rim on interior. A minor glazed-over rim chip. Rim slightly out-of-round. H 11 5/8".
